Recently I’ve been testing out the X Trail range from Soar Running. Soar is a premium running clothing brand based in the UK. What you’ll read here is an ultra-runners review of my experience wearing the clothing in training and race environment. So, if you want a little more on the techie stuff, sustainability or material design then head over to their website and check them out. I’ve been testing out the men’s X Trail Shorts & X Trail T-Shirt. And I’ve tested these out whilst going through my final training block for my main race of 2024, The Race Across Scotland 215 by GB Ultras and the race itself. So, in this review I’ll let you know how they both performed on race day!

Soar X Trail Shorts

The Soar Men’s X Trail Shorts are designed specifically for trail runners. These shorts are crafted with a focus on comfort, durability, and functionality, making them well-suited for the rigors of trail running and ultra-running.

The X Trail Shorts feature a minimalist design, which is both sleek and functional. The aesthetic is clean and modern, with a focus on practicality rather than flashy designs. Available in black or blue colour options, the shorts maintain a subdued yet stylish look that fits well within the broader category of high-end athletic wear. The storage options are perfect for the longer trail runs, with a large secure zipped pocket for valuables, gel loops and darted side pockets.

The shorts are constructed by material that gives off a real premium feel. They have an inner liner compression type short and an outer shell. The material is lightweight yet durable fabric that offers excellent breathability. This fabric is quick drying, which is essential for managing sweat and moisture during intense runs. The lightly compressive liner offers a little extra support and has laser-cut hems and smooth seams and is soft to the touch, reducing the risk of chafing, which is a critical consideration for long-distance runners.

The fit is athletic but not overly tight, striking a good balance between snugness and freedom. The waistband is elasticated and adjustable with a drawstring, ensuring a secure fit that can be customised to your preference.

Given the nature of trail running, durability is crucial, and the Soar X Trail Shorts deliver in this regard. The high-quality fabric and robust construction mean that these shorts can withstand the wear and tear associated with off-road running. Users report that the shorts maintain their shape and performance even after numerous washes and long-term use, making them a solid investment for serious runners.

Soar

Soar X Trail Top

Again, the Soar Men’s X Trail T-Shirt is a performance-oriented piece of clothing, designed specifically for trail runners. It stands out for its attention to detail, premium materials, and functional design elements that cater to the unique demands of trail running.

The design of the Soar X Trail Top is sleek and streamlined, embodying the minimalist yet purposeful aesthetic typical of Soar’s products. The black colourway I tested aligns well with the brand’s focus on function over flashy designs. The overall look is modern, clean, and athletic, making it appealing to those who appreciate performance gear that doesn’t compromise on style.

One of the key highlights of the X Trail T-Shirt is the quality of its materials. Soar has opted for a lightweight, technical fabric that is both breathable and moisture-wicking. This fabric is engineered to keep you cool and dry, even during intense activities in varying weather conditions. The material is also highly durable, designed to withstand the rigors of trail running, including exposure to abrasive surfaces and harsh outdoor environments. The fabric has a soft, smooth feel against the skin, reducing the risk of chafing. Additionally, the top features bonded seams, which not only enhance comfort by eliminating traditional stitching that can irritate the skin but also contribute to the top’s overall durability and streamlined look.

The X Trail T-Shirt fit feels tailored to provide a balance between freedom of movement and a supportive feel. The fit is neither too tight nor too loose, which is ideal for a trail top, as it allows for unimpeded movement while avoiding the excess fabric that can get caught on branches or other trail obstacles. The top also includes ergonomic design elements, such as a slightly longer back hem, which provides extra coverage and prevents the top from riding up during dynamic movements. The sleeves are cut to allow a full range of motion, which is especially important when navigating uneven terrain or using poles during a run. The collar is also cut slightly higher which greatly reduces the chance of chafing being caused by a running pack or hydration vest.

Performance-wise, the Soar X Trail Top excels in multiple areas. The moisture-wicking properties of the fabric ensure that sweat is quickly drawn away from the skin, keeping you dry and comfortable. This is particularly beneficial on long runs where maintaining a stable body temperature is crucial. The top’s breathability is another standout feature. Even during intense physical exertion or in hot weather, the X Trail Top allows for efficient airflow, helping to regulate body temperature and prevent overheating. The quick-drying nature of the fabric also means that even if the top gets wet—whether from sweat, rain, or stream crossings—it will dry quickly, minimizing discomfort and reducing the risk of chafing. In terms of functionality, the top is designed with trail-specific features in mind. For example, the strategic placement of mesh panels enhances ventilation in key areas like under the arms and across the back, where heat tends to build up. These panels not only improve breathability but also reduce weight, contributing to the top’s overall lightweight feel. The fully zipped front is a great feature, allowing for maximum ventilation and cooling when the weather is very hot.

The combination of high-quality materials, bonded seams, and robust construction means that this top is built to last. It can withstand the challenges of rough terrains, frequent washing, and exposure to the elements without showing significant signs of wear and tear.

Price and Value

Both the Soar Men’s X Trail Shorts & X Trail T-Shirt are priced in the higher range compared to other running shorts and t-shirts on the market. However, given the quality of materials, the attention to detail in design, and the overall performance, they represent good value for money, particularly for those who are serious about trail running. While they may not be the most budget-friendly option, their durability and functionality mean that they are likely to outlast cheaper alternatives, potentially saving money in the long run.

Testing

I have worn both the X Trail shorts and X Trail T-shirt for many different types of runs in my final training block and for many hours in different weathers. Including trails over mountainous areas and forest path. From very hot and humid weather to cold and rainy. And they have both performed very well. I have felt comfortable throughout my training runs with no chafing or discomfort experienced whatsoever. They have been through many washing cycles and still look and feel brand new. The stylish look and feel of them just tops the experience off.

I was so impressed with the X Trail shorts and X Trail T-shirt that I decided to wear them for my “A” race of 2024, The Race Across Scotland 215 ultramarathon, by GB Ultras in the UK. Again, they both performed excellently. The T-shirt’s zipped feature was superb for the hot and humid first day, allowing me to regulate my body temperature and move through the mountains with ease. And the shorts inner liner with light compression fit was soft on the skin and I didn’t experience any chafing at all. I wore the shorts for the full 86 hours it took me to complete the race so was impressed that I experienced no discomfort at all and didn’t have to change them. I’ve never had that from shorts before, even having to use anti-chafing cream with other brands. The pockets and gel loops were perfect for carrying more nutrition and my phone, with no rubbing or discomfort in these areas.

Conclusion

The Soar Men’s X Trail Shorts are a premium option for trail runners who demand high performance from their gear. With a focus on comfort, durability, and functionality, these shorts are well-suited to the challenges of trail running. The thoughtful design features, such as secure pockets and moisture-wicking fabric, enhance the overall running experience, making them a top choice for serious trail runners. While the price may be a consideration for some, the quality and longevity of the shorts make them a worthwhile investment.

The Soar Men’s X Trail T-shirt is also a top-tier choice for trail runners who prioritise performance, comfort, and durability in their gear. With its high-quality materials, ergonomic design, and trail-specific features, this top is well-suited for the demands of trail running in various conditions. Although it comes with a premium price tag, the investment is well worth it for those who require a reliable, high-performance trail top that can withstand the challenges of off-road running. Whether you’re tackling rugged mountain trails or navigating technical terrains, the Soar X Trail T-shirt offers the comfort, breathability, and durability needed to perform at your best.
