I’m proud to say I’m back on the Precision Fuel & Hydration team again for 2027. I don’t take that for granted. Loads of quality runners and athletes miss out every year, so Precision Fuel & Hydration backing me again means a lot.
I’ve used Precision Fuel & Hydration for a good while now. They’ve been in the race vest for all the big distance ultras I’ve done, including my 100-mile PB at the GB Ultras Chester 100 this year and they have fuelled my 2 backyard ultra wins this season. As well as the fuelling me through hours and hours of hard training over the years.
Most of the work for an ultra gets done months before the start line. Back-to-back long runs through the winter off-season, miles before work, in the dark when it’s easier to be in bed.
I treat fuelling as part of the training. If I’m going to be taking gels deep into an ultra, my stomach needs to have done it plenty of times before. The long runs are where I work out how much I can take on and when and where I find out what doesn’t sit right.
Getting my sodium right has made a big difference too. I recover better between sessions and I’m not dragging myself round the next run. I’ve especially noticed that in 2026 with the support of Precision Fuel & Hydration.
Whether it’s a long-distance point to point race or a backyard, fuelling usually decides how your race ends. Plenty of physically fit runners have had their day finished early because they stopped eating or drinking properly.
So, I go into every race with a plan I’ve worked out beforehand. Carbs an hour, fluid an hour, sodium an hour. Having a plan takes the pressure of thinking and leaves me to concentrate on just keeping moving. Fuelling is one of the few things in an ultra I can actually control, so it gets planned as carefully as the training.
Next year I want to go bigger. More miles, and a couple of goals that genuinely scare me. That’s what Pursuit of the Impossible has always been about for me.
Thanks again to everyone at Precision Fuel & Hydration for having me back.
